A Summer Night in Shinjuku



We were having a good time with our friends. There was a little conference about body modification and ancestral tattoos by Ryoichi “Keroppy” Maeda and Taku Oshima. We also enjoyed Suspensions made by various professional piercers, including Luciano and Deh, and scarifications by @xiaoaiepoch2. It was a great night, fun, exciting and full of good people. We are already looking forward to the next event.

Yoshiiku and Yoshitoshi: Ukiyo-e Masters at the Dawn of Modernization

Ochiai Yoshiiku (1833-1904) and Tsukioka (Taiso) Yoshitoshi (1839-1892)both honed their skills under the tutelage of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861), one of the greatest ukiyo-e artists from the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. From 1866 to ’67, the two collaborated on brutal and gory images reflecting the turmoil in society as the shogunate collapsed. During those years, the two men shared popularity as friendly rivals. However, Yoshiiku later went on to create multicolored woodblock print illustrations for the Tokyo Nichinichi Shimbun newspaper (predecessor to the Mainichi Shimbun), of which he was a cofounder. Meanwhile, Yoshitoshi continued and expanded upon the tradition of images of warriors (musha-e)that he had inherited from Kuniyoshi and developed ukiyo-e works with historical themes. The Birth of Samurai Firefighters The organized system of firefighting started in 1629 during the time of the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu. When fires would break out, the government would send letters called Hōjibikeshi (legal fire extinguisher) which contained official orders to activate the firefighters. However, in response to repeated fires, the government investigated measures to further strengthen this system. In 1643, the government designated several Daimyō for this task with their primary function being the protection of Edo Castle and the surrounding samurai houses. This was the creation of the Daimyō firefighting brigade or Daimyōbikeshi (Daimyo legal fire extinguisher). In 1657, the first of the Three Great Fires of the Edo Era, the Great Fire of Meiireki , erupted.
